The Five C’s of Diamonds
Posted at 10:50, 03/06/2009 by JodyK
As a woman, I’m apparently meant to have an inborn knowledge of diamonds.  I know they’re sparkly, pretty, and a bit more complicated than that.

The five cuts of diamonds, more commonly known as the five C’s, are the main principles in establishing a diamonds worth.  They are: carats (i.e. the size of the diamond), colouration, clarity, cut and cost.

These five things should be considered when purchasing a diamond.  Each of these elements should be examined individually and as a whole.  Keep in mind, the first four properties are what create the final cost.  In other words if the diamond is large, of good colouring, clear and cut-well, it will be of a higher cost.

When choosing an actual diamond, it should be examined before being set (mounted as a ring, necklace or what have you) in order to fully appreciate and determine its colour, clarity and cut.

Unless you yourself are a jeweler, make sure to buy from a reputable shop, and if you are having the diamond cut according to your demands, make sure it is a lasting shape that you will like for years on end.
