Protect Your Precious Gemstones
Posted at 10:13, 03/06/2009 by JodyK
Gemstones, like all jewels, need to be taken care of in a proper manner for preservation.

The first area you want to pay attention to is scratching. Harder stones, like quartz, are more durable and therefore, more scratch resistant. Softer gemstones like coral, opal, pearl, lapis and turquoise, are more prone to scratching and should be handled accordingly.

The softer gemstones are also more porous, which means you should avoid wearing them in water. (In general it’s a good idea to take off all jewellery before swimming and bathing).

Other gemstones may suffer colour damage (either losing colour or changing colour) from prolonged exposure to light.  They include:
  • Amethyst
  • Ametrine
  • Aquamarine
  • Aventurine
  • Beryl
  • Citrine
  • Kunzite
  • Rose Quartz
  • Smoky Quartz
