Determine Which Dishes are Dishwasher Safe
Posted at 07:57, 01/06/2009 by JodyK
Owning a dishwasher is supposed to save you time and effort. But that doesn’t happen if you spend your time worrying what kitchenware is dishwasher safe, and washing it all by hand in order to avoid mistakes.

So what’s in and what’s out?
Cutlery – Almost all cutlery can be washed in the dishwasher. To prevent corrosion, however, rinse cutlery before loading it into the dishwasher and remove it as soon as possible after the cycle has ended. It is best not to mix silver and steel cutlery together in one basket.
Wooden Utensils – Wooden utensils should always be washed by hand, and not in the dishwasher (the same goes for cast iron).
Glass – Glassware and ovenware are generally dishwasher safe. Make sure if you have lead crystal glasses that they have a “dishwasher safe” label if you want to put them in the machine.
Plastics – Here as well you need to check per piece that is indeed “dishwasher safe” (it should be marked). When loading, put plastics on the upper shelf, as the lower rack is generally hotter and may damage your plasticware.
Metals – Stainless steel pots and pans are completely safe in the dishwasher, as is aluminium, though it may suffer some discolouration during the rinse cycle. In order to prevent discolouration you can always remove aluminium items prior to the rinse cycle.
