A serving of wine is technically 5 fluid ounces. This is important to note on two counts. One if you are counting calories, and two, if you are counting consumption, a la “I only had one glass, I should be fine to drive”. It is very rare these days that a restaurant pours you such a small serving. For starters, based on the price per glass, you would likely complain. Second, based on the size of most wine glasses, again, you would likely complain (5 oz can look like a drop in a puddle in some of the larger glasses). What to do? When drinking out, the best you can do is guesstimate. Learn what 5 oz looks like in a variety of glass types, and assess your drinking accordingly. When possible, drink out of a taller, narrower glass, rather than a large round one, as the glass will seem fuller and somehow more satisfying. While it’s all in the mind, somehow we tend to prefer to drink two smaller separate glasses than one giant glass.
