Restoring your antique is great, destroying it is not. That’s why you need to be extra careful, every step of the way. For starters, when taking the piece apart, use a large, even surface. Put the pieces of the object along the surface in the order in which they were disassembled (makes for easier reassembling later). When cleaning each part, make sure you use the right type of cleaner. This is important. A couple of minutes of research is well worth your while. Remember, slow and steady wins the race. There’s no need to rush a project. This piece has been around a long time. It’s better to do a good job and get it right. Same thing goes for frustration. If you lose patience along the way, simply walk away from the project to cool down. This is a hobby. It should be fun. That being said, if you are looking to sell your end product think twice about your investment here. Sometimes the restoration effort is not worth the input. You could end up spending a lot of time and money on an item that does not increase in value with your efforts. Think about your goal in restoration before you even begin.
