Who isn’t trying to save energy these days? “They” say that you should unplug those appliances not in use to save on electricity. But is unplugging every appliance in your house really going to make a difference in your electricity bill? Apparently digital video recorders and set-top cable boxes are amongst the biggest energy draining culprits. But people tend to prefer to keep these devices plugged in because a) you can’t record programs if unplugged, b) they generally take a while to reboot and c) frankly, they’re in such frequent use, that they’re hard to remember to unplug. Other tools and toys can save energy in standby mode, such as computers, printers, flat-screen TVs, DVD players, CD players, and power tools. Each on its own uses little standby power, however leaving them all plugged in can amount to a whopping 10% of your electricity bill! Not all household appliances continue to draw energy when not in use. Items without a clock or any other light device, usually do not use standby power. These include common household items such as your coffeemaker, toaster, hair dryer and (turned-off) lamps.
