If Phone Calls Disrupt Your Modem Connection...

If your telephone modem shares a line with a phone that has call-waiting, incoming calls might kick you offline. According to the eHow article "How to Diagnose Telephone Modem Problems", you can easily get around this by temporarily disabling call-waiting. Just add *70 to the modem command string. For Windows, go to the Modem’s control panel Dialing Properties settings.
