How to Know When Eggs Aren't Fresh
Posted at 00:02, 07/06/2008 by LoriDeschene

Every now and then I come across the mothership of tips—a site so glorious I almost need to avert my eyes. Today is one of those days.

Lifehackery—not to be confused with Lifehacker—assembled 50 amazingly helpful time-tested tips for the kitchen. Here are some of the best:

  • If you aren’t sure how fresh your eggs are, place them in about four inches of water. Eggs that stay on the bottom are fresh. If only one end tips up, the egg is less fresh and should be used soon. If it floats, it’s all over.
  • Before making popcorn on the stove or in an air popper, soak the kernels in water for ten minutes. Drain the water and then pop as normal. The added moisture helps the popcorn pop up quicker and fluffier.
  • To keep potatoes from budding in a bag, put an apple in with them.
