Reduce Spam with Full Email Headers—for FREE!
Posted at 21:40, 09/05/2008 by LoriDeschene

Reporting spam to your Internet Service Providers helps reduce it, but your email software might not provide you with all the necessary information to track down the online offender. Fear not! Stopabuse.org lists instructions for fleshing out email headers on dozens of email programs.

"Full headers that contain the entire path and the route the email or newsgroup message took are absolutely required when sending complaints about spammers, online harassers or cyberstalkers. If you do not have an email program that has the ability of showing full headers, it's highly recommended you switch to one that does. Without full headers, the ISP is unable to track down a spammer or online abuser."

I find buying my own domain has done wonders for cutting down spam. I give a specific personal email address to friends and family etc. Then for companies or signing up on websites I give a unique address to each one, e.g. mythings@mydomain.co.uk. So far I get one or two spams a day just to my personal address (can't control friends' pcs getting infected unfortunately). But out of over 300 addresses for everything else I get zero. I have in the past received scam emails etc to one or two but then I can delete that entire address and give a new one and also because of the address it was sent to I know which company gave my address to spammers etc (knowingly or not).
