MyThings Tests Your Tips: How to Cut Onions without Crying
Posted at 22:38, 06/05/2008 by LoriDeschene

Sometimes we find tips that seem so unlikely that we just have to try them out for ourselves. So every week the ladies of MyThings will test one tip—either from a previous post or a member suggestion.

This week: if your microwave or refrigerate an onion for thirty seconds first, will you be able to cut it without crying?
We heard two different schools of thought on tear-free onion cutting—and neither sounded very believable to us. Product Manager Tanya and I wiped off our eye-make up in preparation for the failed test. Was it really necessary? Let’s see!

Please do not "click here for more info"... Many firewalls will not allow user to follow that thread. Keep it all under one root URL.

Just cut out the big solid root core, at the bottom of the onion and get rid of what causes the tearing in the first place.

Putting the onion in the fridge does work but to make it work the onion's got to be cold right through so an hour or more. By the way you don't want to go taking the skin off before fridging it as this is likely to make you cry too!

so your eyes are watering after you have been cutting the onion and you wipe them without washing the onion off your hands.. mmhmm what a bright spark =D

you should NEVER put your hands to your eyes, much less after handling onions!

breath through your mouth not nose

Rinsing the onion helps. So, once the outside and then both halves, after the first division. Eventually it will not work, especially the finer you cut the onion (one cant keep rinsing!) or the more onions you cut. Alternatively, covering the onion with water for 15 min before one cuts it also helps (also makes it juicier, as it does any vegetable).

ONIONS making you cry? BREATHE THROUGH YOUR MOUTH INSTEAD OF YOUR NOSE. Use a food processor or one of those mandolins which are $5 and will shred, chop, julienne, etc; a bag of onions in no time flat. Breathe through your mouth, (I heard about the refrigerator and they say it works) or use the tried and true method of using a Mandolin or a Food Processor. Just breathe through your mouth and you will never shed a tear again. Remember...If you microwave the onion, you’re cooking it. Then all the natural sugars will come together and you will feel that someone put sugar all over it when you were not looking. Jack Frost

Put a peg on your nose of hold your breath. It is breathing the onion vapours through the nostrils (not for example touching your eyes) that makes your eyes tear! Alternatively hold the onion under running water or in a bowl of water while chopping it. Obviously a food processor will save you the task of chopping the onion, but then you have to wash the damn processor. Alternatively get your other half to chop the onion - mine does!

Quite simple really, store your onions in the salad drawer of the fridge. works every time for me!
