Software That Tracks Down Stolen Laptops
Posted at 23:02, 05/05/2008 by LoriDeschene
Some things are gone forever once stolen—your newspaper, the last cookie, the ten minutes your boss wasted during this afternoon's meeting. Your laptop’s too important to be on that list. Install Absolute software so you can track it down if its stolen. The company even offers up to $1000 if your laptop isn't found within 60 days.
Safeware The Insurance Agency claims that over 600,000 laptops are stolen annually, resulting in an estimated $5.4 billion loss of proprietary information. According to the FBI, 97% of stolen computers (without Computrace) are never recovered. Absolute Software helps track and recover thousands of stolen computers for its customers.

Because of the article I was looking around at different companies and came across www.gadgettrak.com which offers software that tracks any USB device as well (cameras, flash drives, ipod etc). It'd be interesting if anyone has any experience of these. Maybe an official affiliation/deal/partnering could be achieved between trace.com and one of these companies?

There are a lot of different companies that offer a variety of solutions depending on your needs. First clearly by registering your property on MyThings and then if it is stolen transferring that data into Trace is the easiest and only real free solution. Having the right information (especially a serial number, brand, and model) right when you report it to the cops is the best way to get it into police systems. Using a permanent marker or etcher to write a self defined number someplace inconspicuous is also a good idea. Just make sure only you know it ands it is not a personal number like a phone number or license number some identity thief can use. Regarding these finder tools, it depends on what you are looking for. GadgetTrack and Lojack for Laptops seem to have good relationships with the cops which is a plus. Let them do the work. I would never try to hunt down a laptop that was stolen as you never know what else the scum who stole it is capable of when you find them.

Sorry, I'm a little long winded today. Again, finding stolen property is what the cops are paid for. Lastly, I did a little research and just installed Lojack on my daughter’s laptop before she took off for college. It was pretty simple. Sadley, I am more worried about her leaving it somewhere that she can’t remember, than it getting stolen. Good luck.

Well I don't have a laptop so the nearest scenario for me would be if my desktop got burgled. Far less likely to happen but you never know.
