Rig Your Webcam for Home Security
Posted at 16:01, 17/04/2008 by Dina323

One cheap way to help keep your home safe is the humble webcam. Using free software, you can rig your webcam to automatically take photos or video whenever an object passes in front of them. The webcam can then email you the photos, giving you a perfect shot of a burglar leaning over to steal your computer. Here are a few tips:
Basic: Timershot from Microsoft Power Toys (free) will do.
More comprehensive: Web Camera Security System (www.securitycamsoft.com/webcamsys.htm) or Tincam (www.tincam.com). For those of you with Macs, Evocam (www.evological.com/evocam.html) looks like a good – read "only" – option.
Once your camera is up and running, it’s easy to install your chosen software. Point your camera to it and fiddle with the various settings to get what you want.
