Sony Alpha DSLR-A350
Score: 81.2 (expert reviews:14 )
Score: 75 Posted 20-May-2008 by DCResource
The Sony Alpha DSLR-A350 has a lot going for it. It has an impressive (but not perfect) live view system, image stabilization for every lens you attach, plenty of manual controls, and great battery life. It also has some usability issues that I don't care for, including a small viewfinder, poor LCD visibility outdoors and in low light, and a few too many buttons. In addition, its photos have quite a bit of detail loss at high ISO settings. While other cameras will deliver better photo quality than the A350, none approach its live view capabilities. Thus, it's worth a look if live view is an important feature for you. Since the typical shooter doesn't need 14 Megapixels, I think most folks will be better served by the less expensive DSLR-A300, though.

Sony's "top of the line" entry-level Alpha 350 or DSLR-A350 is an outstanding camera. In this saturated market, consumers really have a lot of great cameras to choose from, all at competitive pricing. At about US$899 or less as tested, I feel the A350 offers a great value for such a well balanced camera. The Live View performance offered by the A350 is way ahead of its competitors. Another feature that helps make this model more appealing is the fact that you have an effective form of Image Stabilization built right in. This will allow you to save some money when buying lenses, where with other models you'll have to spend a nice chunk of change to acquire a stabilized lens to achieve the same level of low-light performance. While we feel this is a great camera, if you don't need 14-meagpixels, a variable angle LCD or Live View, be sure to check out our review of the A350's "little brother", the DSLR-A200. It offers the same overall features, with lower resolution at 10- megapixels, but a slightly faster burst mode.

The only real dilemma presented to those interested in a Sony digital SLR is which one to pick. Though the Sony A200 has an advantage in its low price and larger optical viewfinder, the A350 has the very fast AF in Live View mode with that nice tilting LCD screen. So the true bargain may be the 10-megapixel Sony A300, available for $200 less than the A350 and only $100 more than the A200 when each is purchased with the 18-70mm lens. As for resolution, though the A350 does give you a higher number over the A200's 10.2 megapixels, the printed results are actually pretty similar across the ISO range. Whatever you choose, though, the Sony A350 is a well-rounded package, offering the best of all worlds in terms of usability, resolution, and intelligent design, all of which earns it a Dave's Pick.
