D-Link AirPro DI-764
Score: 61.8 (expert reviews:2 user reviews:3)
Score: 80 Posted 24-Dec-2002 by PC Magazine
The D-Link AirPro DI-764 ($400 street) can act as the core component for a small-office or home network, connecting directly to a broadband modem and providing secure connections for PCs with wired Ethernet as well as supporting PCs with either 802.11a or 802.11b wireless adapters. The DI-764 uses the TI ACX100 802.11b chip set, which in our testing has proved to be somewhat faster and to have a slightly better range than conventional 11-Mbps 802.11b chips. An advantage of the DI-764 for businesses with existing 802.11b wireless networks is that the D-Link router is compatible with standard wireless PC adapters, so you can upgrade to 802.11a and the higher-rate version of 802.11b without having to replace your current equipment. The DI-764 has other compelling features, such as 152-bit WEP encryption for 802.11a connections and 256-bit encryption for 802.11b connections. We tested performance by transferring a 50MB file folder. In 802.11a mode, the D-Link's average 41.0-second transfer time was just a bit slower than that of the Netgear unit but in line with previously tested 802.11a products. We tested 802.11b througHPut in both 11-Mbps and 22-Mbps modes. The average transfer time was 177 seconds in 11-Mbps mode (almost identical to what we've seen with other 802.11b products) and 140 seconds in 22-Mbps mode. The coverage range was identical to that of previous tests. The D-Link DI-764 installs easily, bridges successfully between wireless networking technologies, and performs well. The price is right for this ground-breaking product.

Conclusion: Bought the DI 764 for my home office. Our desktops are wired to the ports provided, which work just fine. Have used laptops with 802.11a and 802.11b cards as well. Performance was aweful, until I installed the upgraded firmware (v 2.01) from their website. Before I installed the upgraded firmware, I was dropping packets every 3 seconds and this pretty much rendered the wireless access useless. Save yourself the frustration and download the firmware from their website ASAP. Pick the second select

Pros: I bought the DI-764 for the 802.11a/b feature since I'm planning on buying a new laptop with an a/b internal card.
Cons: With my current Netgear WGR614 b/g card, the D-Link router couldn't keep a connection and I had to continually rescan the card, normally to no avail. Also, the D-Link router is twice the size of my Netgear router. I was going to return the Netgear router, but on second thought, I think I'll return the D-Link. It stinks.

Pros: Great flexibility with A&B. Simple install and config.
Cons: Reliability...Lasted 2 months and then started to randomly locking up. Only works in G mode. No A mode or dual mode. Support desk near useless..... Always get in store warranty extension when buying D-link products..
